Collaboration between Louis Vuitton and the National Basketball Association (NBA) expands. After the success of the first, presented last November, the Creative Director of the men’s lines of the French maison, Virgil Abloh and NBA come out with the Pre-Fall 2021 collection.
Once again, the 90s are taken as a reference point, more specifically at the age of basketball. It all starts with a fusion of different symbols that come together to celebrate pop culture, fashion and sport. As we know, one of Virgil Abloh’s strengths is attention, reflection on values of familiarity and relativity, which are once again celebrated within this capsule.
Everything is centered on the unifying moments of a sport like basketball, on the inclusiveness of this game and on its different personalities. The capsule offers a wardrobe designed for three main moments in the life of a basketball player. The journey, with casual wear, quilted trousers with the Monogram LV motif and blouson. The game, with informal jackets, Bermuda shorts with multicolored graphics and the NBA logo and shirts. Finally, there are the institutional commitments and one certainly cannot give up on formal dresses that reinterpret the 90s style with the dark suit and the square silhouette. Not even the accessories are missing: leather bags reminiscent of the basketball, Keepall travel bags with python inserts, bags with basketball net details. And again: LV monogram leather ankle boots, strappy sandals, derby shoes, a pair of fur mules.
It wasn’t just Virgil’s brilliant mind that conceived this collection. In fact, some garments were created with the help of designer Don Crawley who collaborated to create a shorts, a jacket and the Keepall travel bag made of the same leather as the basketball. The extra touch is also given by the bijoux present inside the Louis Vuitton x NBA 2021 capsule. These pay homage to the jewels worn by basketball players of the 90s: extra large pendants, chain necklaces and rings accompanied by logos and crystals .
The NBA x Louis Vuitton Pre-Fall 2021 collection, available worldwide from May 28, is proof and celebration of how the influence of the NBA has gotten the better of modern day pop culture and fashion. It is thus possible, through casual garments, to blend the classic LV logo with colored graphics and writings. It is possible to give vent to concepts that go well beyond the simple collection. Concepts such as inclusiveness, aggregation, contrasts. The latter manage to coexist, and managing to tie them together perfectly, the result is sobering.
