The Instagram profile that uses Japanese cuisine
to celebrate fashion.
In 2011 a delicious documentary entitled ‘ Jiro and the art of sushi ‘ told the work of the then 85-year-old Jiro Ono , master in creating the most famous dish in Japan, in his little Tokyo restaurant.
Today, at latitudes far away from the Japanese capital, the concept of art linked to sushi is reinterpreted by a young oriental man who grew up in our country, who gave birth to real visual works created through the sushi art.
Yujia Hu , 31 year old Chinese by birth and Milanese by adoption, is the first ‘sushi artist’ in the world, and with his Instagram profile @theonigiriart is conquering thousands of followers by posting reinterpretations of iconic artists, elements of pop culture and icons related to street style. All produced with the same technique and ingredients of sushi.
Leveraging the power of a social network like instagram, @theonigiriart has found its way to communicate his art to the whole world. A brilliant and innovative idea that, immediately, obtained amazing results: more than 55 thousand followers including well-known celebrities belonging to the world of fashion and art.

Given the large following Yujiu decided to abandon his culinary career to devote himself completely to the artistic one:
“Art is in everything, and it is very subjective: this is my way of expressing myself and showing my experience. If you can arouse emotions with what you do, be it sushi or a painting, then you have created a work of art “
His artistic streak has found its way into the walls of a kitchen whose ingredients were nothing more than rice, seaweed and fish . Using an ancient tradition, he managed to create works with a very high visual and conceptual impact .
With Japanese recipes in urban style , it has been able to differentiate its offer, attracting attention in a sector, that of international food , where even the eye wants its part.
The care and attention to detail shine through every single ingredient used and modeled ad hoc , the love and passion that are behind each creation are palpable.
Among the best known are certainly the reinterpretations of works of art such as ‘the Scream’ by Munch , ‘the Kiss’ by Klimt , ‘Starry Night’ by Van Gogh , ‘The Wave’ by Hokusai and many others.
But it is thanks to the reproduction of streetwear products, in particular the sneakers , that @theonigiriart has known success: as an amateur of NBA basketball , the various Air Jordan models become what the artist called “ Shoeshi “, a real collaboration between shoes and sushi.
Word games are recurring in the art of Yujia Hu , just think of the experiments in the fashion system with maki, temaki and nigiri branded as Jacqumushi or Gushi .
There is no shortage of portraits of famous rappers, iconic characters and basketball players.
To savor his art just go and book in the Hu family Japanese restaurant, the Sakana Sushi in via Giambellino in Milan.
