Among famous artifacts and recent pictorial works, the contemporary works of Damien Hirst arrive at the Borghese Gallery.
The exhibition, which is in collaboration with Prada and curated by Anna Coliva and Mario Codognato, is entitled Archeology Now and will be open to the public from June 8th to November 7th 2021.
The event is truly exclusive, as the artist’s unconventional approach to his audience often overwhelmed traditional exhibition channels, preferring occasional auctions or exhibiting his work in a more intimate place such as London’s Newport Street Gallery, founded by him in 2015. Moreover, it is certainly no coincidence that Damien Hirst and the Prada family are chosen each other having a lot in common. The artistic sense of provocation and the research on the connection of contemporary man with nature are the basis of their innovative language.
Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli, in addition to the family, fashion and business, got in common the passion for art, and have always been classified as the only Italians present among the 200 most important collectors in the world. Thus, this exhibition is another magnificent opportunity for Prada to spread art, with one of the best-known artists on the international contemporary art scene.
The exhibition
Over 80 works from the Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable series will be exhibited in the museum rooms made with different materials – natural, technological and precious – such as bronze, Carrara marble and malachite, alongside the statuary and pictorial masterpieces of the Roman gallery in a project which shows the artist’s incredible ability to combine business and storytelling. The exhibition also features a group of paintings from the 2016 series entitled Color Space which sees the infiltration, in the artist’s words, of “human elements”. The outdoor space of the Secret Garden of the Birdhouse will host the colossal Hydra and Kali sculpture.
The artist
Damien Hirst was born in 1965 in Bristol, grew up in Leeds and from 1986 to 1989 studied fine arts at Goldsmiths College in London. Since the late 1980s, he has created a vast series of installations, sculptures, paintings and drawings to explore the relationships between art, beauty, religion, science, life and death. With his works he investigates and challenges the certainties of the contemporary world, and examines all the uncertainties inherent in the nature of man.
