On 20 September 2021 Nigo will officially take over the creative reins of Kenzo. The Japanese designer and record producer has been chosen by the president of the LVMH group, Sidney Toledano, with the aim of “writing a new chapter in the history of the Maison“.
About a year after the death of the founder Kenzo Takada, the brand chooses to go towards innovation and creativity with Nigo, while still relying on the common cultural roots that bind it to the brand. For Nigo, he reveals, continuing Kenzo’s artistic path giving a new face to the brand will be a great challenge, but he declares himself ready to accept it with emotion and pride.
This will not mean giving up Kenzo’s heritage, but enriching it with his knowledge and expertise in the world of streetwear.
Nigo, who graduated from the same fashion school as Kenzo Takada in Tokyo, has been active as a designer since 1993, the year in which he founded his brand BAPE, diminutive of A Bathing Ape, which immediately became known among young Japanese and Americans. For about thirty years Nigo has been designing streetwear garments, but not only, letting his eclectic vein emerge.
Among the latest collections we remember the one with the Japanese illustrator Sorayama or the capsule collection with Virgil Abloh which took place in 2020.
Having made a brief overview of the Kenzo brand and the character of Nigo, we just have to wait for the February 2022 fashion shows where the first creations of the Japanese designer will be released.
