Ever since we are little girls, we have been influenced by external stereotypes, taking as a life mantra the idea that being female is strictly linked to a concept of perfection, utopian to say the least. We fail to admit that every body has its own constitution, as this would inevitably mean destroying our much-idealized standard of beauty. That’s why every time we buy a dress, we desperately try to enhance ourselves and hide every slightest discord.
Quite a grueling mission… especially when it comes to lingerie. As long as you can remember it, underwear was born with the idea of sensuality. But how many women actually feel uncomfortable wearing a bra and a thong? How many women find it difficult to expose their bodies? Many (including me), because exposing oneself means getting naked and showing oneself completely as mother nature made us.
Needless to say, all these old-fashioned ideals we grew up with, imposed by patriarchal dictates and the mainstream media, are huge bullshit. But above all it is absurd to think how our rolls of flab, our handles, our bumps, cellulite, stretch marks, so on and so forth, are for us “imperfections” and not rather a side effect of the human being endowed with a body, something to even celebrate and show off with pride.
In this perspective moves the designer Michaela Stark, whose unconventional lingerie accentuates and emphasizes the curvy shape and the folds of the body. Born in Australia, she spent her childhood always feeling out of place due to her abundant shapes and her hair. In 2017 she graduated in fashion design, moved to London and started working as a seamstress for some young British brands and then conquered a name in the fashion industry, transforming her past traumas through the lens of creativity into her greatest success .
In this way the Stark label of the same name comes to life, born from the desire for personal redemption and the frustration of not finding bras suitable for her size, but above all with the aim of subverting archaic ideals of beauty and giving voice to common female insecurities. Made of lace, silk and chiffon, its corsets and bustiers juggle ribbons, straps and seams that cut the breasts, abdomen and buttocks of the female body, as if they were slight sculptural protrusions.Nothing too vulgar, just subtly bold or romantically pushed.
Just like the couturiers of the past, each piece is completely one of a kind, specifically designed to fit the wearer’s body. A philosophy from time to time uninhibited, free from any veil of shame and forbidden, which marks without any fear every imperfection, making it bigger and more prominent.
“My job is not to hide, but to celebrate the body”
Her avant-garde vision caught the attention of personalities of the caliber of Beyoncé who chose to wear one of her creations for the visual album “Black is King”. With more than 50,000 followers following her, the designer is gradually destroying bodily imperatives.
There is nothing else to say that whatever our shape, our size, our measure, we will not be perfect nor will we ever feel perfect. Victoria’s Secret angels are beautiful to watch but, let’s be honest, they’re not real because they too will have a few small flaws. Which is why let’s stop tormenting ourselves and let our body shape us and not the other way around.
