Martina Socrate tells us how TikTok has transformed from a pure moment of leisure to work.
We had a chat with Martina Socrate, content creator who, thanks to her overwhelming irony, has conquered TikTok … And not only that!
Can you tell me a little about your background?
I am Martina and I am 22 years old, I graduated from the linguistic high school and I am currently studying linguistic and cultural mediation in Milan. I have always been attracted to the world of social media: I have always liked to expose myself and express myself on these platforms, to the point of doing it in a constant and professional way for two years now.
Do you believe that your studies can give added value to your work on social networks?
I certainly think that my university career can help me in this job because by studying linguistic and cultural mediation, we deepen the field of communication a lot. This allows me to grasp interesting ideas to apply to my work. My high school background in languages also came in very handy: thanks to my command of the English language I am offered interesting job opportunities such as the After Cast interview with Dylan Sprouse, Josephine Langford and Hero Finnes Tiffin.
When did you start making the first videos on TikTok?
I started creating the first videos in 2016, when the TikTok app was still called Musically. In 2018 I started creating content more frequently and in the meantime Musically had transformed into TikTok. Initially I published summer videos as I didn’t have school commitments, it was a way to spend time in a fun way; in this first phase I didn’t pay much attention to light and details, but mainly to the content of the video. Over time I realized that taking care of every detail was of fundamental importance for the success of the video, so I started dedicating myself to it.
Your aesthetic is mainly based on lip-sync comedy videos… Where does this passion come from? What were and are your main inspirations?
When I started to approach this world, the app had several profiles of users who used the lip-sync comedy technique mainly in English. I was very fascinated and amused by this style and for this reason my first lip-sync videos were made exclusively in English. The person who inspired me the most was undoubtedly Amelia Gething and perhaps it is also thanks to her that I began to become more and more passionate about this world.
However, I think there is no specific reason why I do lip-sync videos, but it was simply a natural approach based on a kind of irony that has always amused me.

When and what was the moment when you realized that your lip-sync videos became, though unexpectedly, so viral that they could have an important marketing force?
To be honest, I didn’t start this “project” with the aim of making it a job, until I was contacted by my current agency who made me realize how much my work could actually be worth and how much potential it could be. to have.
The first videos to have gone viral date back to March 2019 which created a “domino effect” making all subsequent videos viral. I still remember being caught off guard as I never expected to reach such a large audience.
We have seen that you have worked with important public figures including Chiara Ferragni. Do you want to tell us how this collaboration was born and developed?
The collaboration with Chiara was born because she was working with a client who had a particular request. A girl from her team contacted me as they needed a creative consultant, so they wanted to get me involved. It all developed in a very natural way: they gave me the various briefs on which I built my ideas and after making my proposals we reached the final decision until we got to shoot the video together.

How important are collaborations of this caliber for the growth of your profile?
Certainly on a general level, collaborating with people who have an important following is of great help both for the growth of the profile and for having greater visibility. In my case, as regards the collaboration with Chiara Ferragni, I had an exponential growth on my Instagram profile because the moment we met to work on the project we took and published photos together … and as everyone knows, she is very strong in this field!
“My ambition, is arrive, in ten years, to look over my shoulder and feel fulfilled, happy and proud of the work done.”
Let’s speak about product placement… How long have fashion brands been interested in your profile and “project”?
The first collaborations arrived in March 2020; there are different types of collaboration: with some brands such as Aniye By, I collaborate on an ongoing basis. Other brands instead provide me with clothes that I can choose to use during events and special occasions. Among the fashion brands I have worked with are Furla, Mugler, Chiara Ferragni Collection, Diesel and Valentina Ferragni Studio. One of the latest collaborations is the one with Oceansapart, a sportswear brand.
To date, new collaborations are being developed with important brands, but out of luck I can’t reveal anything to you yet!

How important are social media in the career of a young creative?
For my type of creativity, TikTok is fundamental, as a new trend is born every week and consequently motivation is continuous and falling into monotony is practically impossible.
However, I believe that social media in general, each in their own way, are important: for example, I use Instagram to show my audience my person who is outside my “character” interpreted on TikTok, for this reason it is essential to create a direct relationship with each of my followers.

What is your secret dream?
I do not have a specific dream, but I do not hide the fact that I would very much like to excel in my work and career and maybe enter the world of acting that has always fascinated me. However, having many open doors to date, I cannot define a particular dream. My ambition, however, is undoubtedly, in ten years, to look over my shoulder and feel fulfilled, happy and proud of the work done. I have various aspirations: I do not want to exclude any of them or focus exclusively on one.
