“Portrait of an artist” is the name of the new Dior Men’s collection in collaboration with the Ghanaian artist Amoako Boafo.
Dior Men’s creative director Kim Jones has decided to collaborate with the African painter Amoako Boafo to create the collection presented during the Digital Fashion Week in Paris.
A collection, therefore, completely dedicated to African art and culture, to which Kim Jones is particularly attached, having grown up between Botswana, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Kenya and Ghana.
In the video that shows the collection and all the background that contributed to its realization, we see Amoako at work…
Kim Jones talks about his Africa and how he fell in love with Boafo’s art.
The latter, a self-taught artist, paints with fingertips and has a delicate and sweet touch;the subjects of his paintings are black men and women.
Amoako defines himself as a portraitist and claims to specifically avoid the background in his paintings, which is almost always monochrome, to focus on the expression of his subjects.
The collection is inspired by the silhouettes worn by the protagonists of the paintings and in the video we see the models “mirrored” in the huge illustrations.
Among the garments stand out the shirts with knotted collar combined with shorts with tuxedo band, bomber jackets in leather or suede, as well as long trench coats enriched with details reminiscent of the paintings of Amoako.
The knitwear alternates various textures and patterns: from the classic Dior Oblique pattern to floral prints, up to the portraits of Boafo reproduced on some tops.
Neon colors give a sporty touch to pastel colors, which are very delicate.
Accessories include amphibians and sandals, fluorescent leather berets, men’s bags and jewelry inspired by sea knots.
The result is a dreamy collection that gives a ‘new image of being MAN: that of Dior is a man who is not afraid to show his fragility!
