“The pair means a man who lives a woman, a woman who lives a man”. So wrote Romain Gary (Roman Kacew, ed) and it is on this basis that in 2012 Victoria Feldman and Tomas Berzins founded their French fashion label: Victoria/Tomas. The creative dialogue is the initial note that gives birth to all their collection, while in the background there is the need to revive punk and underground cultural rhythms born in the 70s and back in vogue, then, in the ’90s.
Victoria, Tomas, you have established your brand in 2012. What aspects of your way to make fashion have changed in these four years and which, instead, have been the same?
We grow together with Victoria/Tomas. We started to do our own business being very young and with no experience. Many things have changed since the beginning: starting from the range of clothes that we have in the collection, till communication. What have remained the same, is our will to reach goals with patience and the hardest work possible, overstepping previous results.
In your biography is written that “each collection is a dialogue between man and a woman”. In that for next winter in which details we can find this kind of communication?
We try to insert this kind of dialogue or we can also say “contrast” in each piece. For example we can mix masculine codes with more feminine fabrics, or feminine shapes with some masculine details or even needs, like big cargo pockets, for example. It can be a classic shirt, like the one your boyfriend has in his wardrobe, then add something girly to it, it could be ruffles or open shoulders.
How do you organize the “making off” of your collection?
We are sharing everything and the whole process is very natural. Before we put our hands on something, first we talk a lot: in each of our dialogues we find something interesting and common and just after that, the process of creating start
What is fashion for you and how do you relate to it when you create a collection?
The line between our life and our work is extremely blurred, we both enjoy creating our world and fashion is one of the instruments of expressing what we love. In fashion and in clothing industry, we love true, timeless clothes, made with an outstanding quality. We think in future we will also take other direction of creation: we love interior, furniture, fragrances and many other things. So, who knows!
In this period fashion world talk about “genderless” and to present all the collections in January by running off together both the man and the woman. What is your opinion about it?
We actually like the way it always was. Men’s and Women’s fashion weeks are very different: they don’t have the same spirit, style and ambiance, so it’s probably nice to have time for each event separately, to have double joy.
Any future plans?
This year began very dynamically, with good results. We will try to increase our results next season! So for the moment the first in the queue is our new collection and our wedding in August. Enough for the moment!
