Welcome back Nineties! The return to the 90’s is definitely one of the most fashionable trends of the moment. Between mom jeans, plaid shirts and Dr.Martens, The North Face dusts off the collection “Steep Tech” dated 1991 in collaboration with the ski icon Scot Schmidt.
Launched in 1991, the “Steep Tech” collection was one of The North Face’s first collaborations with professional athletes. He is the pioneer of extreme skiing Scot Schmidt. Born in Montana (USA), he fell in love with skiing since he was a child. After years of skiing on the slopes, he begins to attend freeskier with long hair. “These race guys are kinda stiff, I wanna go hang out with the guys who are having fun“, says in his interview on the official TNF website. So he starts to move off the track and jumping from top to top with his skis and a pair of sticks, revolutionizing the world of extreme skiing.
” These race guys are kinda stiff, I wanna go hang out with the guys who are having fun”
He leaves the racing world when he is noticed by a cameraman of Warren Miller (American director of skiing and snowboarding), who invites him to join the Exetreme Team, the protagonist of the famous director’s films. His relationship with TNF was born in the mid-80s: Schmidt, after having noticed the company’s products for their excellent quality, asks them to create something more specific for ski mountaineering. Request that was shelved for a few years, until in 1990 Lee Turlington, TNF intern in those years, contacted Scot saying “let’s do it”.
This is how Steep Tech was born, a collection designed with the aim of extreme innovation. A milestone in the history of technical and sportswear that meets streetwear. Designed with the aim of guaranteeing athletes the greatest possible performance, it has been designed with prints and colors with clear references to hip hop culture, making it a timeless classic for streetwear lovers.
The pieces in the collection are as functional as they are full of style. Each garment is proposed in several color variations, all in strictly 90s palette. Grey combined with yellow, olive green with petroleum green and the classic white-black for the less daring.
The collection includes: trousers and jacket in technical fabric, fleece jacket and trail shoes, but also more street garments such as t-shirts, hoodies and iconic pieces from the archive of The North Face, such as the classic down jacket. All accompanied by accessories such as: backpack and pouch, cap with visor and ear flaps.
Now available on the official TNF website and in selected retailers.
