The largest event of New York’s social calendar, the Met Gala, held every year at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, has decided to open the doors to a special exhibition about one of the most avant-garde designers of this century, Rei Kawakubo.
The stylist, described as a “trailblazer” by Harper’s Bazaar, is known to push her creations beyond limits, blurring the subtle line between art and fashion, an expression, that appears in all the creations of his brand Comme des Garcons, founded by herself in the early 70’s.
Not only a designer, but also a businesswomen, Rei Kawakubo, has transformed her company, into a true fashion empire and recently, also launched a retail chain at Dover Street Market.
The rise of Kawakubo, was rather unusual because it started in Japan, and so far from Paris, the world capital of fashion. Her training, is also very peculiar, in fact she never followed formations in the field of fashion and design, but she studied fine art and history of aesthetics both in Asian and Western art.
The Rei Kawakubo‘s style, which represents a clear break of every tradition and formality, makes her considered as an artist before a designer.
“I’ve always been interested in creating clothes that nobody has ever seen before, in something completely new and in how they can express themselves”, she declares at Met.
In fact, the designer influenced a whole generation, not only of designers, but also of artists and architects, making them rethink what are the classic notions of beauty and fashion, unveiling these barriers and thus creating true hybrid identities .
The exhibition, titled “Art of the In-Between”, opened on May 4 and until September 4, 2017, and according to the curator Andrew Bolton, will showcase “the ability of Kawakubo to challenge conventional notions of beauty, good taste and fashion “.
