Art which comes from the instinct and that is formed with a complicated technique. Jewels forged by the emotional mind, pure in his creative chaos. All this sums up the German designer, but based in Milan, Mikky Eger. In her laboratory in via Tortona leads us to the discovery of unique creations of their kind, hand-made, and born from the artist’s personal plots. This gives rise to six collections, each with its particular zeitgeist: New Wave, Metropolis, Into the Wild, Surf’n’Turf, Volcanic Passion and Be Spoke.
What is the reason that pushed you to move to Italy from Germany?
I wanted to study fashion. This is why I came to Milan. I attended the Marangoni Institute that helped me later to create my own line of clothing – Kassim Mikky – which I then abandoned to focus on art jewelery, my passion.
From clothes to jewelry, what was your personal evolution?
Before the jewels I worked in set design and, subsequently, in the merchandising that has led me to work for important groups such as Swatch. Meanwhile my second daughter was born, an event that led me to the decision to slow down a bit ‘, without neglecting at the same time myself. For this reason I started attending the Goldsmith School. Following a holiday in Turkey, after seeing the jewelry typical of the place, and falling in love with them, I founded my own label and created the first collection, New Wave.
Which of your six collections is the most effective from the creative point of view and which, instead, from the commercial one?
This is a very difficult question. New Wave is certainly the collection that represents me the most. He epitomizes my signature, that detail that is recognizable by the customer. Surf’n’Turf then is the one I consider my creative evolution: first I would just have to use the plate, with metals such as silver and gold, making jewelry through overlaps; with Surf’ I stepped forward with material research and I got passionate about the use of wax, which allows you to create three-dimensional objects.
How do you make a Mikky Eger’s jewels?
I invent everything. The ideas come clashing with other previously acquired, or by travel. For example I realized Into the Wild after a holiday in the Caribbean. Many times I decide to start creating based on how I got up in the morning. I have no rules and I do not take inspiration from other artists.
How is your brand positioned on the market?
The jewelry I produce are found in high-end and vanguard stores. The target is clear: conceptual, who understands the value of a work made entirely by hand.
What are your future plans?
I would like to create a collection more intimate than the other. I continue to do exhibition where I show my works. Another goal is to expand sales in the overseas market.
